Acrylic Sheets for Boat Window Repairs

Updated: Apr 2

Acrylic applications can be seen all around us. The benefits of acrylic allow it to be a popular choice for many applications.

When you're next in town, look around you and see how many of these you can spot. They are commonly made with acrylic sheets.

We recently repaired a boat that had broken windows. This is what it looked like when it first came to us.

BEFORE: BROKEN BOAT WINDOW

We spoke with our client to look at the best options available to repair the windows, and acrylic was the winning material.

And this is what the boat looked like when we finished. She's all bright and clean and this beauty is ready to hit the waves.

AFTER: AS GOOD AS NEW

Why Acrylic?

Acrylic is a transparent plastic that is popular because it is an impact resistant alternative to glass. It is one of the clearest plastics available currently. It even has better clarity than glass, transmitting 92% of light.

In this particular project, we needed a material that would resist yellowing from the sun, seeing as it's a boat that is going to be in the sun for long hours. Acrylic fulfilled that requirement, and it also gave the following advantages, which made it the ideal material for this project:

  • excellent clarity and transparency

  • highly resistant to variations in temperature

  • UV resistant

  • as little as 3% degradation outdoors over a 10-year period

  • impact resistant (17x that of glass)

  • light (half the weight of glass)

  • responds well to precision machining

  • highly resistant to chemicals

  • resistant to scratches and minor ones can be buffed out

  • easy to clean

In fact, most major boat manufacturers do use acrylic in their deck hatches and hulls because of the advantages of this material.

With over 30 years' experience in all things plastic from engineering to design to manufacturing, we work across a wide variety of different plastic materials such as Acrylic, Polycarbonate, CA, Acetal, Nylon, PVC, HD/LDPE. We understand the unique characteristics of each type and can offer the best choice of plastic for your project.
